THE US Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation the of the Baltimore bridge now focusing on the electrical system of the 15,000-TEU Dali that toppled the bridge, reports Reuters.

NTSB chairwoman Jennifer Homendy briefed Congress on the ongoing activities, highlighting essential developments and areas of focus.

The assessment thoroughly evaluates Dali's power system, including its electrical components and circuit breakers.

Hyundai, the firm that developed the ship's braking and power systems, has actively advised and supported the investigating team.

Ms Homendy emphasised the importance of revaluating pier safety precautions in response to evolving traffic and shipping patterns.

Despite the investigation's progress, Ms Homendy emphasised the need for more funding to strengthen the NTSB's investigative capabilities.

She argued that hiring four more marine investigators would better support the agency's safety objectives.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore provided a status report on the rescue and salvage operations, outlining developments in extracting containers from the Dali.

As the investigation progresses, the NTSB aims to provide a preliminary report on the collapse by the first week of May, focusing on identifying the incident's causes and implementing safety improvements.

The collapse has significantly impacted the greater Baltimore area, affecting nearly one million people, underscoring the urgent need to address infrastructure vulnerabilities and prioritise safety precautions.
