THE Port of Gothenburg has initiated a significant project to reinforce its quays and deepen its fairways, with the goal of expanding the terminal's draught from 13.5 metres to 17.5 metres, reports London's Port Technology.

The terminal's quay reinforcement work is already underway, and the fairway dredging is scheduled to commence in the third quarter of 2026.

The entire project is anticipated to conclude by the fourth quarter of 2027 or the first quarter of 2028.

Known as the Skandia Gateway project, this initiative aims to enhance the port's capacity to accommodate ships measuring up to 430 metres in length and 65 metres in width.

The project was informally initiated with excavation and diving operations, coinciding with a gathering of port representatives, shipping industry stakeholders, cargo owners, and political figures at Skandiahamnen, the Port of Gothenburg's container terminal, to mark the project's commencement.

"When this project is completed by the turn of the year 2027-2028, the Swedish industry will have better transport conditions and be better connected to the rest of the world," said Gothenburg Port Authority CEO Goran Eriksson.

"This in itself means that Sweden's competitiveness increases, which is the driving force at the Port of Gothenburg."
