THE average size of new US warehouses has increased 143 per cent to 184,693 square feet with their average height rising by 3.7 feet to 32.3 feet.
"This dramatic expansion of warehouse size and height in the US is almost purely a product of e-commerce," said David Egan, researcher at commercial real estate giant CBRE (CB Richard Ellis).
The biggest gains were made in the metropolitan areas of Atlanta, Los Angeles and Cincinnati, reported the American Journal of Transportation.
The credit goes to burgeoning e-commerce, which has driven a more than doubling of the average warehouse built in the US since the early 2000s.
CBRE analysed the average size of warehouses built in the US during the last development upswing from 2002 to 2007 and compared those figures to the current building period of 2012-2017.
Said Mr Egan: "This demand is a long-term factor, meaning that US markets without enough modern logistics facilities will see continued construction as they catch up."
