THE Cosco-managed port of Piraeusin Greece forecasts that total container throughput for 2017 will break the four million TEU mark, surpassing 2016's box volume of 3.736 million TEU.
Container traffic has already topped 3.7 million TEU at piers 2 and 3, which are managed by a Cosco subsidiary. Pier one, which is directly operated by the Cosco-managed Piraeus Port Authority (PPA), saw container throughput in the first 10 months of the year rise 80 per cent compared to the same period in 2016 to stand at 380,000 TEU.
The goal for 2019, according to the port's management, is to handle five million TEU, which would make Piraeus one of the top 30 busiest ports in the world, reported Tornos, an Athens travel portal. In 2016, Piraeus was ranked in 38th place internationally, according to Lloyds List.
Compared to other Mediterranean ports, Piraeus was ranked the third busiest port in 2016, behind Spain's port of Algeciras with container throughput of 4.76 million TEU and Valencia's 4.72 million TEU.
