Containership fleet tops 21 million TEU mark, reports Alphaliner

THE world's cellular containership fleet reached a new high of 21 million TEU in November, according to Paris-based research house Alphaliner.
But fleet growth was slower than usual in the last two years as it took 22 months for it to hit the 20 million TEU mark, a factor attributed to a greater rate of scrapping, which took 501,000 TEU from the fleet.
Since March, however, the trend has reversed with 700,000 TEU added with 930,000 TEU delivered and 230,000 TEU scrapped.
The accelerated rate is expected to continue to pass 22 million TEU in 12 months when deliveries of 80 ships of 10,000 and 21,000 TEU accompanied by a slow down in scrapping.
