THE manager of Zeus Shipmanagement admitted to marine polution (MARPOL) violations concerning oily-waste discharges on the tanker Galissas, reports Rostock, Germany's FleetMon.

The chief engineer and the captain face up to six years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The owner also pleaded guilty to sailing across the Atlantic and US waters without notifying the coast guard that the inert-gas system was faulty, which created hazardous conditions on the ship.

Despite discovering that the inert gas system was inoperable at the Port of Rotterdam, the owner decided to sail to Newport, Rhode Island, to receive a spare part instead of waiting, which could have led to unsafe oxygen levels in cargo tanks and a risk of explosion.

However, the system remained non-operational even after the spare parts arrived.

The US Coast Guard conducted an inspection and found that the inert gas system was malfunctioning, with the oxygen levels in the tanks far above the safe limit, which posed a significant explosion risk.

The vessel was then ordered to relocate offshore to minimise the risk.

The first mate falsified logbook entries, following the operations manager's instructions.

Several deficiencies were discovered, including missing records like the garbage record book, load line certificate, and fire drill records.

Additionally, the lifeboat launching arrangements were inoperable, and there were issues with the steering gear, electrical systems, winches, portable water system, and the oil-water separator.

The coast guard found that over 9,500 gallons of oily waste had been discharged into the ocean by lower-ranking officers on the ship, on the chief engineer's instructions, who also directed his subordinates to lie about the waste's location.

As a result, Zeus Shipmanagement, the chief engineer, and the captain pleaded guilty to various charges.

Zeus Shipmanagement was fined $250,000 and received four years of probation.
