OF the top five biggest European - Algeciras, Antwerp, Bremerhaven, Hamburg and Rotterdam - Hamburg performed best in turn times between August and September, CargoSmart data.

In spite of opposition by environmentalists holding up the deepening of the Elbe River to enable mega ships with a draught of 14.5 metres to reach the port, Hamburg this year handled 90 per cent more calls by ships with capacity of 18,000 to 20,000 TEU.

The overall average arrival delays at the top five European ports increased during the peak season from September to October.

At Hamburg the monthly average vessel arrival delay ranged from 13.7 to 17.6 hours, outperforming Rotterdam where the average vessel arrival delay rose from 17.8 hours in August to 22.2 hours in October, said IHS Media.

Hamburg achieved the shortest vessel departure delays, although the delays at the port rose from 15 hours in August and September to 18.1 hours in October.

Antwerp, which attracted the highest number of mega ships, had the longest berth times among the five ports with a monthly average duration of 25 hours, which was longer than the other ports by at least six hours.

Rotterdam was the busiest European port over the peak season, with 770 vessel arrivals in August, 746 in September and 715 in October, yet 70 per cent of the vessels calling at the port had a capacity of less than 4,000 TEU.

Hamburg was the second busiest port in the study, with vessel counts of 532, 531 and 456 in August, September and October respectively.

In the first nine months of the year the port of Hamburg handled 6.8 million TEU, up 0.4 per cent year on year; Antwerp handled 7.8 million TEU up 3.2 per cent; and Rotterdam's throughput rose 10 per cent year on year to 10.2 million TEU.
