COSCO Shipping Ports Limited and PSA Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding to mark the launch of a new berth at Cosco-PSA Terminal (CPT) in Singapore.
"The cooperation will deepen collaboration between CSP and PSA, enabling the two to strengthen Singapore as a global container transshipment hub," said the joint press release.
Established in 2003, CPT has served as a hub for container shipping in the Southeast Asia region. The launch of the third berth follows the CSP supplemental agreement signed with PSA in March 2016.
This replaced the original two berths in CPT at Pasir Panjang Terminal 1 with three new and larger berths at Pasir Panjang Terminal 5.
The first two berths commenced operations in January 2017, with an annual handling capacity of two million TEU.
OCEAN Alliance, of which Cosco is a part, commenced operations last April. With the strategic reshuffle of shipping routes by OCEAN Alliance, throughput will continue to grow at Singapore.
With a view to meet the new requirements from shipping alliances and mega-vessels, as well as maximise the utilisation rate of the berths, Cosco Shipping Ports has decided to commence operations at the third berth on January 1.
This will increase the handling capacity of CPT to three million TEU annually, said the joint press release.
The new berth, like the first two, will be supported by an automated yard, enabling the terminal to increase productivity and enhance service, it said.
