ALL-CARGO airline Cargolux plans to add 60 pilots to its current 469 at its Luxembourg hub in 2018 to meet rising demand, said CEO Richard Forson.
That compares with a need of "40-50 pilots per year over the next two to three years," according to comments made last month by head of corporate communications Moa Sigurdardottir, reported Luxemburger Wort.
Mr Forson said the carrier's result for 2017 would be US$100 million better than the loss forecast at the start of the year, without stating what the loss was.
He also revealed that the airline might add to its fleet of Boeing 747-8 and B747-400 freighters "depending on circumstances next year." Aircraft would be purchased from "the used market because it presents value for the airline."
Commenting on the codesharing with Emirates SkyCargo in October, Mr Forson said that adding new destinations is under constant review.
"A lot of it will depend on the economics, whether we can service the route properly," he said. "But this is where our relationship with Emirates comes in. If we are able to offer certain destinations where we don't fly, we can buy space from Emirates. So we can access their global network."
Mr Forson said demand was rising in Asia and that its Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport's hub in China was the airline's third-largest hub after Luxembourg and Hong Kong.
On average, there are 150 takeoffs by Cargolux per week with a 70 per cent load factor, which he described as "significant".
On a separate note, Mr Forson added that Luxembourg Airport's infrastructure was "getting towards the maximum" it can handle.
"We have the runway works in 2019, 2020 and, from the airline's perspective, we will have an exercise in March 2018 where we will test our system where we can operate in the restricted hours and address any issues," Mr Forson said.
He did not rule out using another airport.
