DUBAI ground handler dnata, and five supply chain firms, have completed a trials of a logistics platform using blockchain technology, reports New York's Air Cargo World.

"We are on the cusp of revolutionising the way we operate," said dnata vice president Kevin Ennis.

Project partners dnata, Emirates Innovation Lab, flydubai Cargo and IBM claim the new system eliminates redundant data and improves visibility and transparency.

They created a system that converted the companies' conventional, paper-based data from the purchase order through to delivery to the consignee's warehouse.

As a result, the blockchain test digitised the supply chain and streamlines the processes in delivering cargo to its destination.

"The success of our study to use blockchain technology in our operations means greater security, efficiency and cost savings to our customers," said Mr Ennis.

Blockchain technology is said to be a secure, public electronic network, which can be managed autonomously to exchange information and act as a permanent ledger of all transactions.

The technology is also said to be "hack-proof" because no single party can modify, delete or edit any one of the digital "blocks" that automatically records each transaction without the consensus from others on the network," said the report.

The technology "has great potential to exponentially improve efficiency and transparency of business networks, especially in cargo and logistic flows," said the report.

Said Emirates vice president Neetan Chopra: "Neither the technology nor the potential is easy to understand or appreciate. It is imperative to carry out experiments and trials so participants can experience the benefits of the breakthrough technology."

Mr Chopra also said Emirates will now work to introduce blockchain technology more widely.

Said flyDubai vice president Mohamed Hassan: "Blockchain technology is able to transform sectors far beyond financial services. It improves the way we work together providing reliable and convenient air freight."
