MAERSK Line plans to stop calling at Mundra port on its Far East-Indian Subcontinent service (FI3) and instead call at APM Terminals Pipavav (Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd), to help push up volumes at its sister terminal unit that faces stiffer competition on India's west coast.

Local shipping sources told IHS Media the weekly loop currently accounts for 120,000 TEU of Mundra's total container throughput annually and that the FI3 addition will be a major boon for Pipavav, after it saw its volumes decline three per cent in the July-to-September quarter compared to the previous quarter.

The port rotation of the FI3 is: Xingang, Dalian, Qingdao, Busan, Kwangyang, Ningbo, Singapore, Tanjung Pelepas, Colombo, Mumbai-Nhava Sheva (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust) and Pipavav.

The last Mundra call is expected to be on January 8, however, this has not yet been officially confirmed. In June Maersk added a Pipavav call to its Europe-Middle East (ME1) service that kicked off with the arrival of the 10,100-TEU Maersk Gibraltar, which is the largest ship to call so far to call.

APM Terminals Pipavav has been focusing on productivity gains and attracting alternative cargo types, especially liquid and roll-on/roll-off shipments, to boost volumes.

The operator in November set a new productivity recorded when it loaded and discharged a total of 5,682 TEU on the APL Boston during a 21-hour stopover at berth.

That record-setting performance was the result of average gross berth productivity of 162.2 moves per hour, an improvement on the previous best of 151.9 moves per hour reached in July 2014.

"The quick evacuation of cargo at the port will enhance the efficiency for our customers. We continue to do our best to deliver operational productivity for all our customers," said APM Terminals Pipavav managing director Keld Pedersen.

APM Terminals Pipavav has an annual handling capacity of 1.35 million TEU and features a 2,411-foot quay, draft of 48 feet, 89 acres of yard space, and multi-purpose and ro-ro handling infrastructure.
