Problems with new operating system at Felixstowe being resolved

THE UK's port of Felixstowe stated in a customer advisory released on Monday that "performance across all areas of the container division - vessel, road and rail - has improved significantly over the last 72 hours." The announcement follows complaints from container shipping lines that the rollout of the port's new terminal operating system has caused severe delays.

The customer advisory went on to say that "the average turnaround time for trucks at our container terminals is down to 48 minutes," the port said. "Quayside productivity is double that achieved in the early part of last week and rail operation has stabilised."

These comments follow a statement released last week by container carriers and 2M Alliance partners Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Co that said the new system caused "severe delays and cancellations across all areas of port operations, including rail, road and shipside container moves."

According to BlueWater Reporting, Felixstowe is frequented by 14 direct region-to-region liner services, 11 of which are operated by either the 2M Alliance, Maersk or MSC, and 13 intra-European loops (including those connecting north Europe with the Mediterranean), eight of which are operated by either MSC or Seago Line, Maersk's intra-Europe subsidiary, reported American Shipper.

"The understanding of our customers has been greatly appreciated during the startup phase of the new operating system," the port said, adding that it will continue to work 24 hours a day, seven days a week to "iron out minor teething issues and bring service levels back up to our usual high standards."
