THE Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SCFI) transpacific rates have fallen to where November's gains have been lost and US east coast rates are also down though less severely, reports London's Loadstar.

London's Drewry Maritime Research said rates for the US west coast are 18 per cent lower than at this time last year, and for east coast ports, the consultant says the difference is even higher at about 29 per cent below 2016.

The recent spot rate erosion is a concern for transpacific carriers, not least as the slack season has just started, according to Alex Younevitch, of Container Freight Markets at Platts Global.

"There wasn't one carrier we spoke to this week that expressed any optimism about rates in December," he said.

But backhaul Europe-Asia rates held much of their gains from March and April, attributed to alliance network changes which resulted in skipped sailings and a capacity crunch.

Drewry's World Container Index (WCI) noted Rotterdam-Shanghai spot rates were US$991 per FEU, a two per cent increase on the week before, but 57 per cent higher year on year.

Said rate bench marker Xeneta CEO Patrik Berglund: "Shipping lines are still going into the year-end in a much healthier market than a year ago, despite the recent softening of rates.

"Our customers are already contracting 2018 rates and we are already seeing plenty of long-term contracts committed throughout the full year, at double the low point of 2016," he said.
