Colombo electrifies RTGs for US$10 million as greening trumps costs

COLOMBO International Container Terminals (CICT) has completed converting its diesel-powered rubber-tyre gantry (RTG) cranes to electric power, reports Sri Lanka's Sunday Leader.
CICT now has 40 zero-emission RTGs and at its Colombo South container terminal that cost US$10 million, the project which has achieved 45 per cent reduction in overall carbon emissions to the environment and a reduction and 95 per cent less diesel engine use.
Said CICT CEO Ray Ren: "This initiative demonstrates our commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Port of Colombo. We believe in leading from the front, even when some in the industry are driven by costs rather than green ethics."
CICT's electrification of RTGs involved fitting electricity collector trolleys in the RTG cranes and constructing a bus bar.
CICT has attracted the biggest ships on the Asia-Europe route. Of these, Milan Maersk (20,568 TEU), MSC Maya (19,224 TEU), Mogens Maersk (18,300 TEU), MSC New York (16,652 TEU), CMA CGM Marco Polo (16,020 TEU), Edith Maersk and EMC Thalassa Hellas (14,000 TEU) and their sisters are now regular callers.
