RED Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT) at Jeddah Islamic port has taken delivery of four super post-Panamax ship-to-shore (STS) quay cranes manufactured in China by ZPMC. They raise the number of quayside gantry cranes at the terminal to 14.

ZPMC is also supplying a number of rubber-tired gantry cranes to RSGT as part of a US$35 million investment programme. The new cranes are expected to push up annual throughput capacity from 1.8 million TEU at present to 2.5 million TEU a year, reported themaritimestandard.com.

"We have constantly invested in capacity at our Jeddah terminal to meet the rapidly expanding needs of our customers," RSGT managing director, Jens Floed, was quoted as saying.

"These new super post-Panamax cranes will contribute to position us as the natural hub for transshipment in the region and we remain the only terminal in Jeddah with the outreach and depth to handle the largest vessels on the route."

In a separate development, group chairman and chief executive Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem of DP World, unveiled plans for the group to develop its South Container Terminal (SCT) in Jeddah port, in support of the Saudi Vision 2030 project launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz.

Mr Bin Sulayem said the group's "plans involve increasing efficiency using innovative technology solutions and making it (SCT) a semi-automated facility to create skilled jobs for Saudi nationals, and transforming the port into an important gateway."
