CMA CGM first to power its future 22,000-TEUers with LNG engines

FRENCH shipping giant CMA CGM has announced that it will equip its nine 22,000-TEU with liquefied natural gas fuelled engines.
"We are making the bold decision to equip our future 22,000-TEU vessels with a technology firmly focused on the protection of the environment," said CMA CGM chief executive Rodolphe Saade.
"In choosing LNG, CMA CGM confirms its ambition to be the industry's leading force in the protection of the environment by being a pioneer on innovations and the fight against global warming," he said.
He said CMA CGM was becoming the first to equip giant containerships with LNG engines that "allows, compared to current ships using heavy fuel oil, up to 25 less CO2, 99 per cent sulphur emissions and 99 per cent less particulate matter and 85 per cent less nitrogen oxides emissions".
LNG powered ships, according to the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), which measures a ship's environmental footprint, is improved by 20 per cent compared to ships only propelled by fuel oil.
"These containerships will be LNG-powered, fuel being used only to create the spark needed to start the engine," said the company statement.
"By choosing LNG, CMA CGM goes beyond current and future regulations that limit the sulphur cap to 0.5 per cent in 2020. The group is also fully in line with the Paris Climate accords and ongoing discussions at the international level," it said.
The CMA CGM Group is firmly committed to the reduction of its carbon footprint for the protection of the environment and the preservation of the oceans and biodiversity.
"Between 2005 and 2015, the Group has reduced its CO2 emissions per container transported per kilometre by 50 per cent and has set up an ambitious plan to further reduce its CO2 emissions by 30 per cent between 2015 and 2025," the company said.
