MEMBERS of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference - Train & Engine (TCRC-T&E) have voted to reject a proposed one-year renewal of the existing labour contract with the Canadian Pacific Railway, opening the possibility of a strike, but more likely another round of negotiations.

"We look forward to working with the union membership to better understand this result and to discuss next steps," said CP president and CEO Keith Creel.

"While disappointed, I have been clear that we are focused on improving our relationship with our T&E employees and that commitment remains unchanged," he said.

The union, representing 3,000 CP conductors and engineers, had no public comment.

Annual wages at rival Canadian Nation railway are C$108,000 (US$84,600) for a locomotive engineer and C$92,000 for a train conductor.
