COSCO Shipping Holdings said it would raise CNY12.9 billion (US$2 billion) through a share sale to build 20 new containerships as it returns to a profit for the first nine months of 2017, Reuters reports.

The newbuilds comprise five 13,800 TEU vessels, four 15,568-TEU vessels, five 20,119-TEU vessels, and six 21,237-TEU vessels.

COSCO Shipping Holdings posted a profit of CNY2.7 billion for the first nine months of the year, reversing from a year-on-year loss of CNY9.2 billion.

The company will undertake a private placement to fund the construction of the containerships, six of which will be able to carry over 21,000 TEU, the report said.

In September, French shipping giant CMA CGM confirmed an order for nine ships of 22,000 TEU - six firm orders with an option for three more - for late 2019 delivery.

Swiss-Italian Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) reportedly ordered eleven 22,000-TEUers in September. MSC told Singapore's Splash 24/7 that the new ships would replace older chartered vessels to be retired.
