Genoa port may see 2018 cargo volumes drop 10pc due to bridge collapse

THE collapse of the Morandi bridge has hit a main artery of the Italian port of Genoa and as a result the Autorita' di Sistema Portuale del Mar Ligure Occidentale (AdSP) - Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority) is now warning that the port may handle up to 10 per cent less cargo this year compared to 2017.

According to AdSP president Paolo Signorini, container throughput at the port was expected to rise by five per cent this year after container throughput rose by 15 per cent year on year in 2017 to 2.6 million TEU.

Mr Signorini said the port's growth this year will depend upon whether a new road can be built along the coast to accommodate freight, reported Hellenic Shipping News.

The Morandi Bridge was used by an estimated 1,000 to 1,500 trucks a day. If this alternative route works, the port will cope with the bridge collapse. Otherwise, there will be major congestion on other alternative routes, which is likely to hamper freight traffic even more.

Mr Signorini also said that in principle, the port should aim for 24-hour operation. If Genoa port can deploy terminals and trucks at night as well, this would significantly reduce congestion during the day.
